The bearded man in the red suit was spotted waving to passers-by when he touched down in the Northern Midlands town.

But on closer inspection it was discovered that the smiling entourage belonged to the Barnes family's collection of Christmas decorations.

Roy Barnes, 16, said his family had been adorning the house with Christmas lights and decorations for the past six years.

"It's a family tradition," he said.

"It brings joy to other people, they get a lot of fun out of it."

Roy said cars would drive by the house on most nights of the week to look at the lights.

He said the family also got into the Christmas spirit by donning costumes.

His parents, Debbie and Roy Sr dress up as Mr and Mrs Claus, Roy becomes an elf and little sister Dyontae, 8, wears a Santa's helper outfit.

This Christmas spirit seems to be shared among those who decorate their houses.

Wayne Dank lives on Wellington Street at Longford and has continued the tradition despite having previously had some of his decorations stolen.

Mr Dank said he liked putting up the decorations to bring Christmas joy to his five children, who also dress up and hand out lollies to passers-by.

Mr Dank said the lights took almost a day to put up.

He was not concerned with electricity costs.
