TASMANIAN grain growers and national industry researchers came together last week at Campbell Town to discuss the future of sustainable farming.
The research update presented by the Grains Research and Development Corporation and Southern Farming Systems also provided producers with information on the latest practices and research outcomes.
The corporation's southern regional panel deputy chairman Dr Mark Peoples said the update enabled Tasmania's grain growers to keep informed about research and development relevant to their farming systems.
"This year's update covered a range of topics, from integrated farming systems and incorporating livestock into cropping rotations, to new herbicide options, herbicide resistance and eradicating spray drift," Dr Peoples said.
"A panel of local growers also shared the results of a variety of drainage strategies being implemented on their properties - something very important for Tasmanian growers in light of a extremely wet winter in 2009.
"The grower updates not only offer practical information, but also provide the local grower community with an opportunity to come together and discuss what's happening in its industry."
The program included a presentation from 2009 Nuffield Scholar and Longford farmer Robert Bradley, who shared his experience and key findings from a study tour of the US and Europe.
