More than thrills and spills

GETTING thrown around on the back of a bull or running in front of that same bull trying to protect its rider would not be everyone's chosen sport.

But for participants in the rodeo scene, it sure seems like it.

Ross Rodeo secretary Daniel Johnson, who has experienced bull riding first-hand, said it is the challenge that keeps riders going back for more.

"It is the difficulty of it ... when you are matched up against something where probablity says you are not going to be able to do it ... that draws you," Mr Johnson said.

For the bull riding events, competitors are randomly assigned a bullock from the supplied head of stock.

When in the arena, they must stay on that animal for a minimum of eight seconds.

"They get on what they are given, and try to do their best," Mr Johnson said.

"Some of the heads of stock have got a reputation for people getting a better score on them ... I guess because they jump higher ... they are very sought after."

For some, watching these events may be a little too on-the- edge-of-your-seat.

Either way, the Ross Rodeo will be held next month and promises to be a huge, family orientated event.

There are eight major rodeo events, including bull riding, bare-back riding, saddle-back riding, steer-wrestling, rope and tie and barrel racing.

There are also dog trials, miniature horses, woodchopping contests, whip cracking displays and steam engine displays.

The woodchopping events start at 8am. The rodeo starts at noon.
