Students taste life in physical education

07 Sep, 2010 10:47 AM
THERE was plenty of community participation at the Ross Marathon on Sunday.

Almost 100 more people entered the marathon, venturing from interstate and even as far as New York and Tokyo to test their fitness levels.

University of Tasmania human movement lecturer Casey Mainsbridge said he was impressed with the professional manner in which his fourth- year students organised the event.

He said the students were the face of the event - controlling music, entertaining children, commentating on marathons and generally making sure the community enjoyed themselves.

"The students did a really good job - they were instrumental in the organisation leading up to the event, as well as the operation of the event on the day, and I believe they were very happy and satisfied with the outcome of the day," Mr Mainsbridge said.

"It gave them the opportunity to be part of a large- scale physical activity community event."

Mr Mainsbridge said the students would evaluate and talk about what roles they played and the importance of those roles in making an event successful.

"They're going to be the ones who will be the face of physical education in the future, so if we can give them a bit of a taste of something (like this marathon), then that's hopefully going to benefit them," he said.

A market, held at the Ross Bakery Inn, was organised by the Ross Tourism Hub Group to coincide with the marathon.

"We thought the weather might have been a bit of a turn-off but it ended up being OK," group secretary Wendy Dyer said.

Mrs Dyer said the market was a bit smaller than expected and had to be moved inside due to the weather.

There were about 10 stalls selling a range of items including bric-a-brac, home cooking, fruit, vegetables, sauces and preserves.

"We're planing to hold a market once a month in Ross over the summer," Mrs Dyer said.
