Frank Deane started painting five years ago. Mr Deane recently got into the Christmas spirit and painted an English landscape scene which he transformed into Christmas cards for family and friends. ISABEL BIRD chats with the Evandale artist.
Which art medium to you work in?
Watercolour. I haven't worked in any other medium.
I went to a watercolour class and I enjoyed it tremendously.
I enjoy what I am able to produce with the help of my teacher and the other people that go to the class - and I enjoy the end result.
Describe your style in three words?
Limit it to basically landscape.
How long have you been painting?
Five years. I wished to see if it was possible for me to be able to paint in some format.
It's just something that you feel like you want to do.
Who has influenced your work?
Certainly my teacher, Mrs Rosemary Hill.
Probably seeing paintings that have been done in the past.
Captain Haughton Forrest. I've always had over my lifetime a connection with Forrest paintings.
What has influenced your work?
If I see something that would be nice to attempt, I do it.
Even though the painting that comes out is nothing like what I might have seen.
I do country scenes usually.
Is there a particular place in the Northern Midlands that has inspired you?
No. I've painted a number from the outback, but I haven't painted any local scenes.
(But) a lot of great painters have come from this region over the years.
Through living here I gained the information that Thomas William Roberts was living in the area for some time.
He is a leading Australian artist.
He is buried along Illawarra Road at the church.
His paintings were absolutely wonderful.
Is there a piece of art that you could not bear to part with, or that stands out as your favourite creation?
All of them. A painting is a very personal thing and the artist gives part of himself or herself to the painting - it is very difficult to part with part of yourself.
I keep the majority of them.
Have you been to the Museum of Old and New Art?
I've heard enough descriptions to turn me right off.
You either wish to go or not wish to go.
For those who wish to go I think it is a wonderful thing, but in my case, I have no specific wish to go and see it.
Say the first thing that comes to your mind:
Colour: Australian Outback
Northern Midlands: Rural scenes.
Love: My wife.
Famous Artists: Captain Haughton Forrest.
